Analysis of Sub-Task Strategies of Healthy Individuals and Individuals with Hemiparesis: A Clinical Model
Zvi Kozol, PhD

Abstract

The article presents a novel working hypothesis for analyzing the participation of various body parts in the execution of functional sub-tasks in normal and pathological motor performance. The model is based on the assumption that a motor task is accomplished thorough the management of serial functional sub-tasks that regulate stability and mobility. At each phase of the motor activity, the nervous system modifies forces, moments, and inertial forces in accordance with the functional requirements of the sub-tasks and the available motor resources. Individuals with a motor disorder who cannot regulate the execution of sub-tasks in the normal way may engage in alternative compensatory strategies

In order to demonstrate the use of the model, the rolling activity of a healthy individual on a mat under different conditions is analyzed with reference to how different constraints encourage the use of alternative sub-task strategies. The model is also applied to the rolling performance of an individual with hemiparesis post-CVA, illustrating how impairments of one side facilitate contra-lateral sub-task compensation. The clinical value of the model is discussed.
