Application of Motor Learning Principles in the Treatment of Gait Limitation Following Stroke. A Case Report |
Abstract: Training based on the principles of motor learning is effective in motor function rehabilitation. As part of the knowledge translation process, a practical model for the application of the principles of motor learning in physiotherapy was developed. The purpose of this case study was to demonstrate the use of the model for gait rehabilitation-related functions in a woman living in the community, who was in the chronic phase after stroke. The patient was 37-years-old with left hemiparesis. The implementation of all components of the model is presented in this case study. This includes selection and identification of the motor skill and the learner characteristics and planning the practice and assessment of the learning process. Improvements in gait-related outcome measures were demonstrated using previously validated clinical tests. In addition, the patient reported improvement in participation. The article refers to the insights gained from the actual application of the model. Key words: motor learning, neural plasticity, knowledge translation, gait, hemiparesis, case study. |
